Students aged five and above are enrolled in a self-contained MD program. Students who participate in this program receive instruction in all academic subject areas in the same classroom. A special education teacher delivers the instruction based on the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards, the district curriculum and the goals and objectives in the student's Individual Education Program (IEP). The program is designed to meet the needs of students who have more than one disability. Class size may vary. Paraprofessionals are assigned to all MD classes.
The educational program provides an integrated approach to learning that utilizes special subjects such as art and music, related services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling and physical education to provide a broad range of opportunities for each child. Carefully planned field trips and assemblies support the educational program.
All services are IEP driven. Emphasis is placed on the child as an individual and as a member of a group. Experiences in learning, as defined by the IEP, encompass the academic as well as the social components. Curricula support appropriate decision making and the acceptance of natural consequences.
Assistive Technology & Adaptive Equipment
MCSSSD is fortunate to have state-of-the art adaptive equipment and assistive technology. Students use assistive technology throughout their learning experiences as directed by the IEP. An array of assistive technology is available to the students enrolled at the Joseph Cappello School. Augmentative communication systems enable many of the students to communicate expressively through picture symbols and various voice output devices. Devices are deployed in a variety of settings to ensure generalization throughout the school as well as in the community and home environments. Inservice training is provided to staff in the area of assistive technology and augmentative communication. The assistive and educational technology staff work closely with teachers and therapists to maximize communication opportunities.
