Integrated Learning

Integrated Learning OpportunitiesPage4

Joseph Cappello School has partnered with the Hamilton YMCA on a project which is designed to provide preschool-aged students with autism the opportunity to learn alongside typically developing peers. Autistic students who have mastered beginning learning readiness skills and can benefit from some group instruction, have opportunities several times a week for play and interaction with students who are enrolled in the Hamilton “Y” preschool class. This program emphasizes social development and appropriate behaviors.

Student participation is based on the achievement of prerequisite skills. These include the ability to independently follow simple directions participate in activities with minimal assistance and demonstrate independence in self care.

Parent Groups

The child study team members of the Joseph Cappello School plan and implement a variety of Parent Groups. The Parent Groups serve a dual function: providing knowledge and strategies to parents and providing a forum which allows parents to meet together, discuss concerns, and share information. Groups serving parents of children with autism meet monthly. Some of the topics discussed include: Applied Behavior Analysis, Communication, Sensory Integration and Structure in the Home Environment. These groups also meet to give the parents a chance to discuss their own issues and socialize.

Parents of children enrolled in the preschool and multiply disabled programs also meet throughout the year. A variety of parenting issues are discussed. These include such topics as: Family Systems and Communication; Behavior Management, Sensory Issues and Child Development.
